The koi pond at Disney’s Aulani Resort and Spa is a large and beautiful element of this resort’s impressive architecture and landscaping. Situated at the foot of an elegant waterfall and between the Makahiki restaurant and The ‘Ōlelo Room, the pond is a popular draw for kids and grownups alike. This video is unique in that, were you not to know where this was filmed, you’d likely not suspect it was on a Disney property. And that’s the point. Disney theming isn’t all about mouse ears, film characters, or sing-a-longs. Today, Imagineers and cast members plan, design, build, and care for environments that, while not obviously connected to popular movies or merchandise, remain firmly connected to Walt Disney’s enthusiastic love for and interest in the natural world, animals, and their habitats. For me, this koi pond is a perfect example of this.
